Panchakarma means "five actions" in Sanskrit. It refers to a set of five classical purification therapies used in Ayurveda to cleanse the body of accumulated toxins (called ama) and restore balance between the three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Unlike quick-fix detox trends, Panchakarma is a structured, doctor-supervised process. It typically includes a preparatory phase (Purvakarma), the main therapies themselves, and a recovery phase (Paschatkarma) with dietary guidance.
Most patients begin with gentler therapies like Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (herbal steam) before moving to deeper cleansing procedures such as Basti or Virechana, depending on what their doctor recommends after an initial consultation.
If you're considering Panchakarma for the first time, the most important step is a proper consultation, since the right combination of therapies depends entirely on your individual constitution and health condition.
